This certification can be taken on its own for existing teachers to add Special Education to their existing teaching license, or as part of the M.S. in Education program, whether pursuing licensure in this area or not. If a teacher desires to add this area to their existing license, there is an additional practicum and the required licensure tests at the state level.
Courses include the following topics as well as opportunities to pursue individual interests in the field of Special Education:
Additional courses allow adding to existing teaching license. Elementary and secondary teachers are required to take an course focused on introduction to special education if they do not have this on their existing transcript. These courses are not counted as part of the minor.
This program is part of the School of Education.
Coursework must be completed in consultation with the Director of Graduate Studies and/or the Special Education faculty. Faculty will work with the student to develop an advising plan that ensures the most effective execution of the program.

Non-Degree Seeking
Students wishing to obtain additional licensure in Special Education need only apply as non-degree seeking graduate students through IU East. Check the space that identifies you as non-degree seeking.
Degree Seeking
Should a student desire to obtain a graduate degree at IU East, the Special Education coursework will be applied towards the Master’s Program in Education. Students selecting this option must complete the IU East Application for Graduate Studies. Students seeking a Master of Science degree in Education must declare themselves to be degree-seeking.
In either situation, the application and processing fee must be submitted to the Admissions office either online or in-person.
