Nursing lecturer receives IU nursing award
Tonya Breymier, lecturer in nursing, has received the Karen Cobb Creative Teaching in Nursing Education Award. This award is given annually to a full-time Indiana University School of Nursing faculty member to recognize innovative and creative teaching. Recipients are recognized for the development of a creative and innovative teaching strategy that incorporates the Seven Principles of Good Education, produces documented learning outcomes, is recognized by students as contributing to their learning, and contributes to the scholarship of teaching.

Breymier has been innovative with the integration of simulation within the IU East School of Nursing curriculum.

This past year she has worked with Marsha Williamson, lecturer in nursing, and with clinical assistant professor Mary Folkerth’s junior level course, The Developing Family and Child. Simulations have been integrated within the junior level clinical course rotation and these experiences have elevated student confidence and competence prior to entering the acute clinical arena.

Political science professor to have book signing at IUPUI
Paul Kriese, associate professor of political science, had a book signing on October 1, 2009, at the Barnes and Nobles IUPUI Bookstore for “Global Community:  Global Security.”

The book is jointly published with Randall Osborne, professor of psychology at the University of Texas in San Marcos. The Global Community book combines political and psychological views of global security.

Early College Preparatory Academy
The Campus Library began its partnership with Richmond Community School’s Early College Preparatory Academy on September 16 by providing research instruction for the 64 Dennis Middle School students involved with the program. The seventh and eighth grade students perform assignments that are academically rigorous, using academic library resources.

The Early College program is structured to focus future leaders on the college experience before graduating from high school. The IU East Campus Library joined this innovative educational venture with RCS and Ivy Tech to provide students with an opportunity to access more than one hundred specialized databases and other scholarly resources.
Sarah Morey, intern for the Campus Library, will lead the students through the research instruction. She is working on her master’s degree in Library Science/Library Management Technology Specialization degree from IUPUI and has experience as an English teacher in Thailand and as an experiential educator in the Bahamas.

Student Veterans Organization receives monetary award
The IU East Student Veterans Organization has been awarded $2,000 for its program from the Military Family Research Institute at Purdue University. The proposal was submitted by Martina Clark, peer mentor for IU East student veterans. The money will assist and support student service members and veterans on campus.

The award was one of seven grants of up to $2,000 awarded through Operation Diploma, an MFRI initiative launched through a $5.8 million gift from Lilly Endowment Inc. Operation Diploma empowers Indiana’s higher education institutions and SVOs to better serve student service members, veterans entering college for the first time, and those re-entering college after extended service or deployment.

Art and graphics manager receives Indiana Arts Commission grant
Susanna Tanner, art and graphics manager in the Office of Communications and Marketing, was one of two Region Five artists to be selected to receive an Individual Artist Project Grant by the Indiana Arts Commission. Tanner will attend a workshop in Santa Fe, New Mexico to work on defining her photographic abilities more stylistically. She is primarily interested in places and people. Her current style is a mix of photojournalism and casual posed shots, incorporating motion, available light, simplicity and depth.

Tanner also exhibited her work on September 25 during the Governor’s Arts Awards, held at Cornerstone Center for the Arts in Muncie.

Sports information director welcomed to IU East
Kyle Wright is settling in as the new sports information director. Wright moved back to Richmond, Ind. in August after he was appointed as the new director.

As the sports information director Wright coordinates all media efforts for IU East athletics.

Wright previously was the sports editor and editor for the Crestview News Bulletin in Crestview, Fla., and also worked as a sportswriter for newspapers in Florida and Indiana as well as reported for the Associated Press and Hoosier Basketball Magazine.

Wright received his Bachelor of Arts in Journalism degree from Valparaiso University. He is a graduate of Northeastern High School.
