Indiana University East and the Richmond Art Museum invites the community to participate in “Cork and Canvas” from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, April 18, 2014. The inaugural “Cork and Canvas” will be held at IU East’s Room 912, located at 912 E. Main Street, Richmond, Ind.

The cost is $35 and includes art supplies. Wine may be purchased at the event. Participants must be age 21 and over.

Dean of the IU East School of Humanities and Social Sciences Katherine Frank said, “Programming at IU East’s Room 912 continues to grow, and we are excited to expand our partnership with the Richmond Art Museum as we bring a series to Richmond that has long been suggested by the community.  There is much excitement about the Cork and Canvas series, and we are delighted to be able to help the community enjoy this opportunity led by exceptional artists.”

Well-known Indiana artists, Mary Ann Davis and Carol Strock Wasson, will provide step-by-step instruction to create your own masterpiece while sipping a favorite drink!  Gather your friends for a colorful group experience. All painting supplies are provided including an apron to keep you looking your best.

“Unlike similar events in surrounding communities, Cork and Canvas at IU East’s Room 912, will feature two exceptional Indiana artisans who will conduct the class. RAM’s relationship with professional Indiana artists, will enhance the students understanding of the painting process. The event will foster an atmosphere of enjoyment, learning and creativity,” said Shaun Dingwerth, executive director of the Richmond Art Museum.

Mary Ann Davis enjoys the challenge of painting on location and has a reputation as one of Indiana’s premier outdoor painters. Her paintings celebrate nature, emphasizing color and atmosphere. Her works have been included in American Art Review, Pastel Journal and Southwest Art and two Painting Indiana books. She exhibits widely, winning top awards. Her willingness to share her knowledge has earned her a reputation as an outstanding artist and instructor. She is a signature member of the American Impressionist Society and the Chicago Pastel.

Carol Strock Wasson is devoted to plein air painting and is always venturing forth into new areas with pastel or oil. She is focused on painting with spontaneity and freshness. Her dedication is evident in awards and entry into prestigious shows across the country. Most recently she received the Silver Medal Award at Indiana Heritage Arts in 2007. Other shows include Hoosier Salon, Arts for Parks, Pastel Society of America, and Pastels USA. Wasson was one on 10 artists to participate in Painting Indiana II, the second in a series of books produced by Indiana Plein Air Painters Association (IPAPA). She is a supporting member of numerous organizations locally and nationally. She is represented by Gordy Fine Art, Muncie, and Editions Limited, Indianapolis.
