Indiana University Police Department – East celebrates the graduation and achievements of police officers Maxwell Meddings and Kristen Miller from the 44th class of the IU Police Academy. The ceremony was held August 12 at the Indiana Memorial Union in Bloomington.

Officer Meddings was recognized as one of five from the class of 44 cadets to graduate with honors. To receive the honors, he met high standards in firearms, academics, and physical fitness. Meddings, from Fairfield, Ohio, is a senior criminal justice major.

Officer Miller finished as the top female in the physical fitness section and was fourth overall. Miller, from Ottawa, Ohio, is a senior majoring in psychology and business with a concentration in accounting, and she is minoring in criminal justice and forensic accounting investigations. She is also a member of the IU East women’s basketball team.

IUPD-East Chief Scott Dunning attended the ceremony with Sgt. Brad Smoker.

“I am very proud of Officers Medding and Miller and their accomplishments. Both represented IU East with their professionalism and passion at the academy,” Dunning said. “Max and Kristen have demonstrated that they work hard and are committed to serving the campus community.”

Cadets complete 14 weeks of training from May to August at the IU Police Academy. Through the program, cadets complete 600 hours of training. Both Meddings and Miller joined the IUPD-East department in fall 2016 as cadets.

The academy provides a comprehensive and unique law enforcement training program which, when coupled with the university’s educational programs, produces a highly qualified, experienced, and educated law enforcement professional. Cadets in the academy receive complete law enforcement training required by the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. Once the program is successfully completed, the cadets become certified law enforcement officers with full police authority in the state of Indiana.

The officers return to campus as certified police officers sworn in the state of Indiana. While completing their degree, Meddings and Miller will work part-time for the IU East Police Department. IU East has hired three new cadets for the 2017-2018 academic year. They are Mitchell Burelison, Rikki Foust and Katelin Hall.
