Indiana University East will feature artist Sara Hanlon in the upcoming exhibit in The Gallery. “The Works of Sara Hanlon” will be on display March 29 through May 7. She is also scheduled for workshops with IU East art students in the studios.

After retiring from an overseas teaching career (reading and ESL) in Iran, Korea, Italy and England, Hanlon graduated from the Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI in 2003 with a BFA in painting and drawing. During her time at Herron, Hanlon was awarded a Fraser Travel Scholarship, an Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) Grant, the Mary Milliken Drawing Award, and an Artist’s Grant to the Vermont Studio School.

In addition to her sojourn at the Vermont Studio School located in Johnson Vermont, Hanlon has studied at Old Lyme Academy of Art and Design, Old Lyme, Ct., the Pont Aven School of Contemporary Art in Pont Aven, France, Indiana University, and the Marc Adams School of Woodworking located in Whiteland, Ind. Her most recent accomplishment has been the completion of a two-month fellowship for painting awarded by the Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, New Mexico.

Hanlon concentrates on landscape in oil in a loosely realistic style which focuses on composition and color. Pure abstraction and the landscape in abstract format is also an area of interest for this artist.

In terms of 3D work, Hanlon has done some small-scale indirect sculpture with found objects. One of her favorite colors is terra cotta, so rust in any found form often appears in her metal collages and mix media hanging sculpture.

Hanlon shows at Editions Limited in Indianapolis and at Lucille Lucas in Crested Butte, Colorado. She and her husband reside part time in Columbus, Ind. and part time in Taos, where she is currently building a studio on the north mesa.
