IU East announces 2015 Lingle Scholars

Mackenzie Spurrier and Destiny Maitlen have been chosen as the 2015 Lingle Scholars. The scholarship award will continue throughout their pursuit of a four-year degree at Indiana University East.

Destiny Maitlen

Both graduated in June 2015 and are freshmen at IU East this fall.

Maitlen is a graduate of Centerville Senior High School and Spurrier is a graduate of Richmond High School.

Maitlen is the daughter of Chuck and Christa Maitlen. While at Centerville High School, she was the first vice-president of the National Honor Society and volunteered multiple times for Reid Foundation’s BRAvo! and American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. She plans to pursue a nursing degree.

Mackenzie Spurrier

Spurrier attended Richmond High School. Her parents are Jeff and Tracy Spurrier. While in high school, Spurrier was a member of the National Honor Society, Richmond High School Choir and a member of the RHS golf team.

She was a dancer at Dixon Dance throughout high school. Spurrier was also a 10-year member of 4-H and participated in food and swine.

The Lingle Scholar award was established by Paul and Pat Lingle in 2005 to help keep the best and brightest youth in Wayne County. The scholarship is given to two incoming freshman students who have also been accepted to the IU East Honors Program, an academic program that provides an intellectually enriched curriculum for highly motivated students.

Paul Lingle said, “Pat and I are continually impressed by how determined and accomplished Wayne County young leaders are! This scholarship is an incentive for these students to continue, at IU East in the Honors Program, on their path of study. We are excited to make this investment in our young people!”

Applicants must undergo an interview process with the scholarship and Honors Program committee.

Recipients receive a $2,000 annual scholarship over four years.
