Ange Cooksey, humanities lecturer at Indiana University East, has received the Brian Douglas Hiltunen Award from Indiana Campus Compact. Cooksey was presented the award on Tuesday, March 25 at the 2008 Governor’s Conference on Service and Volunteerism.

Cooksey established the Baxter Neighborhood Help Center three years ago and serves as a cooperative project between IU East and the Richmond community. The center has been a successful learning tool and community outreach program for IU East students. ICC recently awarded Cooksey and IU East a $30,000 grant to expand the service learning program and apply the Baxter center model to other Wayne County neighborhoods.

The conference was sponsored by Indiana Campus Compact (ICC) and the Office of Faith Based & Community Initiatives.

“ICC’s mission is to partner college campuses with local communities to address concerns right here in Indiana,” said ICC Executive Director Jackie McCracken. “There were many deserving candidates this year, but ultimately, we selected students, faculty, and staff who we thought best supported that mission. These award winners embody the very best in developing community service and civic engagement programming on our college and university campuses.”

ICC is a non-profit membership organization with 45 member college and university campuses throughout the state. ICC serves as the premier advocate in Indiana for service-learning in higher education and civic-engagement activities on college campuses.

The Hiltunen Award was established in 2000 to honor the memory of Brian Hiltunen, former project director for ICC, and his work with faculty who practice the scholarship of engagement. The award recognizes one faculty member who has provided outstanding contributions to the scholarship of engagement in higher education.
