Indiana University East was named to the 2015 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

This designation is the highest honor a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement. The Honor Roll list is available online.

The Center for Service-Learning provides assistance for connecting community organizations with interested faculty and students. The Center for Service-Learning is housed in the Campus Library.

IU East was recognized for its community outreach programs:

• The School of Nursing and Health Sciences contributed significantly toward healthy living by community members. Service was built into courses with 442 nursing students engaged, impacting 13,515 individuals locally and abroad. Projects included the annual trip to Chinle, Ariz., where nursing students provided community nursing as well as 1,300 flu vaccinations; nursing students traveled to New York City and Washington, D.C. to provide care, nursing and a tobacco cessation session at food banks; students traveled to Belize to provide medical and psychological care, food distribution and education to students in school setting; and locally in Wayne County students provided service at community health fairs and area soup kitchens, helped with the gynecology program by teaching Head Start and Reid Birthing classes to expectant and new mothers, and partnered with Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, Boys and Girls Club, Open Arms Ministries, Golden Living Center, the Wayne County Tobacco Program, Wayne County Health Department, State Psychiatric Hospital, Ball Memorial Hospital, the VA Hospital and other local and regional health care facilities.
• The spring 2015 Criminal Justice Capstone partnered students majoring in the program with eighth grade students at Hibberd Intermediate School to engage in experiential learning about environmental justice issues and to develop an understanding of environmental justice in the Wayne County area. Content included animal rights, alternative energy, land use and the politics of food in the United States through research and field excursions. The project culminated in documentaries intended to demonstrate learning outcomes via explaining these issues and offering potential solutions. Service was provided by 16 students, impacting 120 individuals.
• Student-athletes are positive role models with a history of exemplary service. IU East was once again awarded the NAIA Champions of Character designation for the 2014-2015 school year. IU East student-athletes from all sports participate in community service projects. These activities range from volleyball mini-clinics for Central Indiana Girl Scouts to Habitat for Humanity events to assisting children seeking holiday gifts as part of Toys for Tots. Service was provided by 173 student-athletes, impacting 2,772 individuals.
• IU East had 1,580 students engaged in academic service-learning and community service who provided 63,874 hours of service.

About the President’s Honor Roll
The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll is an initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). The President’s Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition an institution of higher education can receive for its community service work. CNCS is a federal agency that engages more than 5 million Americans in service through AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, the Social Innovation Fund, and the Volunteer Generation Fund, and leads the President’s national call to service initiative, United We Serve.
