Registrar attends annual IACRAO meeting
Dennis Hicks, registrar, attended the 71st Annual Meeting of the Indiana Association of Collegiate Registrars & Admissions Officers (IACRAO), October 25-26, in Columbus, Ind. He presented the session, “FERPA: Educating Your Campus & Staying Compliant.”  Hicks was a contributing editor to the AACRAO 2010 FERPA Guide.

Also, Hicks was recently nominated for the Distinguished Service Award which recognizes an active or retired AACRAO member for exceptional contributions to the profession in a volunteer capacity at the national level.

IU East announces student veteran coach-counselor
Joseph James was recently hired as IU East’s student veteran coach-counselor. IU East obtained a grant to fund services for student veterans that allows for a new staff position, a student coach-counselor, to assist veterans, their families, and current military personnel as they transition to college life and studies.

James will serve as an advocate and liaison to the faculty on behalf of the veterans and their families. He is a veteran having served seven years on active duty with the U.S. Navy. He completed his doctoral training at Kent State University in psychology and special education. James utilized his G.I. Bill to fund his graduate education.

Prior to joining IU East, James has served as adjunct faculty at several colleges and universities and has maintained a private practice as a psychologist for several years where he has provided services to veterans and their families.

External Affairs vice chancellor participates on social media panel
Rob Zinkan, vice chancellor for External Affairs, and John Oak Dalton, director of Communications and Marketing, presented during the Indiana Fundraising Day presented by Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) – Indiana Chapter on November 19.

The presentation is “Changing Organizational Culture to Embrace Social Media.”

This session outlines strategies for getting buy-in from your leadership and your organization as well as donor-centered approaches for social media tools.

The conference is being held at the Indianapolis Marriott North Hotel.

Previously, Zinkan also served on a panel at the SummitUp conference held in Dayton on October 19. The panel was titled “Social Media on Campus.” SummitUp is a one day conference dedicated to exploring the integration of creativity, communication, and technology.
