Chancellor Participates on WFYI Expert Panel on Higher Education
Chancellor Nasser Paydar participated in a televised interview April 15 with an expert panel to discuss the future of higher education in Indiana.

The panel was for Indiana Lawmakers, a weekly show on WFYI Indianapolis, is hosted by Jon Schwantes.

Paydar was joined on the panel by Senator Mike Delph, R – Carmel; Representative and Outreach Liaison for the Purdue School of Education Sheila Klinker, D – Lafayette; and Commissioner Teresa Lubbers of Indiana’s Commission for Higher Education.

NSM Assistant Professor Co-Publishes Paper on Potential Therapeutic Agent in Lung Cancer
Hitesh Kathuria, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry, recently co-authored an original research paper in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology published April 2011. The paper is “The Human Immunodeficiency Virus Protease Inhibitor Ritonavir Inhibits Lung Cancer Cells, in Part, by Inhibition of Survivin.” The publication is a joint effort between IU East and IUPUI.

Ritonavir is a potential therapeutic agent in lung cancer, but its targets in lung adenocarcinoma are unknown, as are candidate biomarkers for its activity. RNAi was used to identify genes whose expression affects ritonavir sensitivity. Synergy between ritonavir, gemcitabine, and cisplatin was tested by isobologram analysis.

The Journal of Thoracic Oncology, the official journal of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, publishes research articles on topics relevant to detection, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of thoracic malignancies. The Journal of Thoracic Oncology is a peer reviewed scientific research journal published monthly by Lippincott Williams and Wilkins.

Curator’s Work Selected for Adkins Arboretum’s Art Competition Exhibit
Ed Thornburg, gallery curator and lecturer of fine arts, received first prize for his wall sculpture made from hammered and forged copper during the Adkins Arboretum’s 12th annual Art Competition, “Discovering the Native Landscapes of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.”

Thornburg’s work was one of 206 entries selected by Ricky Sears, visiting assistant professor of art at Washington College. Only 21 of the submitted pieces were chosen to be on exhibit in the Visitor’s Center.

Adkins Arboretum is a 400-acre native garden and preserve at the headwaters of the Tuckahoe Creek in Caroline County.

Student Showcase Exhibit now in Meijer Artway
Thirteen students received $50 cash awards for work completed in art courses in fall 2010 and spring 2011.  This competition and exhibit is held annually and sponsored by Stagg Safety Equipment of Richmond, Ind.
