Women and Minority Business Enterprises certification workshop
Indiana University East welcomes minority and women business owners in the Richmond area or surrounding counties to campus for a resource workshop. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, October 9, in the Community Room, located in Whitewater Hall. Registration begins at 8:45 a.m.

The workshop is sponsored by Indiana University Business Diversity and the Indiana Department of Administration Minority & Women’s Business Enterprises. The workshop is geared toward those minority and women owned firms that are interested in doing business with Indiana University, the State of Indiana, and Indiana Department of Administration.

Business administration lecturer to receives award honoring contribution to economic education
Tim Scales, senior lecturer in business administration, received the Rising Star Award from the National Association of Economic Educators and the Council for Economic Education.

The Rising Star Award honors individuals who have made extraordinary contributions and a positive impact on economic education. The Rising Star Award encourages, recognizes, and acclaims one who has met the challenges of providing economic education service early on and who demonstrates the dedication and potential to be a strong leader in the future.

The award was presented to Scales on Friday, October 4, during the 52nd Annual Financial Literacy and Economic Education Conference Awards Dinner at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel in Baltimore, Md.

BOSS Technologies program receives Richmond Redevelopment grant
The Business Opportunities for Self Starters (BOSS) Technologies program has received a $48,521 grant from the city of Richmond Redevelopment Department. BOSS Technologies is a program in the Center for Entrepreneurship, part of the School of Business and Economics, that provides high school students with the opportunity to build business knowledge, apply their research and to strengthen their networking opportunities while developing a business plan including the use of technology.

The two-year grant stems certified tech park funds that will be used to for a work-training program overseen by Tim Scales, senior lecturer in business administration. At least 70 Richmond High School students, who are interested in business and entrepreneurship, will be able to participate in the work-training program and learn how to put together a business plan.
Richmond High School teachers Denise Selm and Terry Runnels will help teach the program’s curriculum.

Students may pick up an application for the BOSS Technologies program at Richmond High School. Applications are due by October 12 with the program beginning October 17.

School of Business and Economics dean, associate professor publish case study on hospital flood disaster
David Frantz, dean of the School of Business and Economics, and Fredricka Joyner, associate professor of Business Administration and Organization Behavior, had a teaching case published in the Journal of Case Studies.

The case, “Flash Flood: Crisis Management at a Regional Medical Center,” is based on a hospital that experienced a disaster on a scale few other hospitals have survived – a flood of historic magnitude severely damaged the hospital, forcing it to close its doors for the first time in its 90-year history.

In a matter of minutes, the flooding destroyed several critical functions and systems. When all was said and done, the hospital incurred more than $200 million in damages, although this figure was not known for many months.

The case gives students an opportunity to think about communication needs related to an organization’s recovery from a crisis created by a flood.
