Indiana University East School of Nursing has six members of its faculty who have earned the designation Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) after meeting strict eligibility criteria and successfully completing a rigorous certification examination developed and administered by the National League for Nursing.

“Having six Certified Nurse Educators on campus speaks to the exceptional quality of the nursing faculty and nursing programs offered at IU East,” said Dean of the School of Nursing Karen Clark.

According to the National League for Nursing, achieving the CNE certification establishes nursing education as a specialty area of practice and creates a means for faculty to demonstrate their expertise in this role. It communicates to students, peers, and the academic and health care communities that the highest standards of excellence are being met. Since the program was established in 2009, over 2,000 faculty nationwide have received the CNE designation.

The IU East faculty who have earned the CNE designation are:

• Paula Baumann, assistant professor of nursing. Baumann received her Ph.D. from the Indiana University School of Nursing, and her B.S.N. and A.S.N. from Miami University. Her current research interests include nurse entrepreneurship and intra-organizational entrepreneurship.

• Tonya Breymier, associate dean and lecturer for nursing graduate programs, received her M.S.N from Ball State University and her B.S.N. from Wright State University. Her research interests include simulation in nursing education, evidenced based teaching strategies, and informatics.

• Curtis Bow, lecturer of nursing, received his M.S.N and B.S.N from Ball State University and Associate of Science from Vincennes University. His research interests include geriatric health and social issues, and adolescent high risk behaviors.

• Mary Folkerth, clinical assistant professor of nursing, received her M.S.N. from the University of Pennsylvania and her B.S.N from Villanova University College of Nursing. Her research interests include child and adolescent obesity and related health problems, collaborative teaching and learning, and use of technology in education.

• Sherry Rankin, clinical assistant professor of nursing, received her M.A.N. and B.S.N. from Ball State University. Her research interest is geriatric health.

• Marsha Williamson, senior lecturer of nursing, received her M.S.N. from Case Western University and her B.S.N. from Indiana University. She is also a certified nurse-midwife from the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing. Her research interests include program assessment and clinical simulation in maternal-newborns.
