The Indiana University East School of Humanities and Social Sciences is hosting jazz pianist and composer Marc Rossi in concert from 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3, at the Gennett Mansion, located at 1829 E. Main St. in Richmond. This event is sponsored by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and Mindful Explorations, courtesy of the William H. and Jean R. Reller Endowment.

The event cost is $10 for community members and $5 for students.

Rossi is professor of piano at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He is a versatile contemporary classical composer, jazz pianist/composer, and longtime practitioner of Indian music.

Elliott McKinley, assistant professor of music, said he has known Rossi for much of his life.

“I met him when he was a student at the New England Conservatory of Music studying jazz piano and composition with my father. He is an incredible musician with great depth of knowledge and experience in many musical traditions both Western and non-Western,” McKinley said. “He is equally adept at writing symphonies and string quartets as he is playing funk-jazz fusion and world-music.”

In addition to Tuesday’s jazz concert, Rossi will lead a jazz improvisation workshop from 3-5 p.m. at the Gennett Mansion. He will present a lecture on Indian Music from 2-3 p.m. on Monday, April 2, in Springwood Hall room 217. He will also lead a composition master class on Wednesday, April 4, from 4-5:30 p.m. in Springwood Hall room 217. The events are free and open to the public.

“Needless to say, it will be a great pleasure and treat for us to host him for a few days. Students and community members will be exposed to a professional musician working at the highest level, and many different kinds of ways of thinking about music – both culturally and stylistically,” McKinley said.

Rossi has toured with jazz legends Jimmy Guiffre and George Russell. As a classical composer, his work has premiered at Boston’s Symphony Hall and Dvorak Hall in Prague, The Czech Radio Symphony of Prague, and The Silesian Symphony Orchestra. He has been the guest lecture and led jazz master classes at the Venice “Ethnomusicology and the Emerging World Music Market” conference, UCLA, the Universita della Musica in Rome, and other institutions.

Rossi received his master’s degree in composition from New England Conservatory where he studied composition with William Thomas McKinley and Donald Martino, and jazz with George Russell, Jaki Byard, and Jimmy Giuffre. He has studied in composition and orchestration with Frank Bennett and William Thomas McKinley, jazz improvisation with Charlie Banacos, and Indian music with Peter Row, Pradeep Shukla, and V.R. Venkataraman.

In January 2012, he released “Resonance,” a CD collaboration with Indian santoor master Satish Vyas, on the SONY label.
