IU East’s 52nd Commencement Ceremony is May 12

Indiana University East will host its 52nd Commencement Ceremony at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 12. The ceremony will be held on campus, located at 2325 Chester Blvd.

This year, the university will confer 642 baccalaureate degrees and 68 master’s degrees.

Indiana University President Pamela Whitten and IU East Interim Chancellor Michelle Malott will preside and address the 710 graduates eligible to receive IU degrees during the ceremony. The figures include degree recipients from December 2022 and candidates for May, June and August 2023.

The Commencement Ceremony will be broadcast via the live stream (note: this website will be available starting at the time of the ceremony).

Jason Gillo, Hanover, Maryland, will address fellow classmates during the ceremony as the student speaker. Gillo is receiving a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. He was selected to address the 2023 class after an application process. Gillo is a former member of the U.S. Air Force.

Alexander Austerman, Connersville, Indiana, is the recipient of the Naomi Osborne Award, an honor given to the graduate with the highest grade point average, and will lead the graduating class during the alumni induction ceremony. Austerman will receive his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with concentrations in economics, finance, and marketing.

On the day of the Commencement Ceremony, the main entrance at Chester Blvd. to campus will be closed except to graduates, faculty and designated vehicles. The public and travelers to Ivy Tech Community College will be directed to Cart Road for parking. Signage will direct traffic.

IU East will host events and ceremonies leading up to the 52nd Commencement Ceremony.

The IU East School of Nursing and Health Sciences will host its pinning ceremony for nursing graduates from 6-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, in Vivian Auditorium. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The event will also be available on IU East Facebook Live at iue.edu/facebook. Graduates will receive their pin to wear for the Commencement Ceremony and nursing awards will be given to students.

Also ahead of commencement, IU East’s Hooding Ceremony for master’s degree candidates will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, in Vivian Auditorium, located in Whitewater Hall. The hooding ceremony signifies a scholarly and personal achievement. This ceremony is by invitation.
