The community is invited to Empty Bowls from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 25, in the Whitewater Hall Lobby. This year, the Empty Bowls luncheon is being held in coordination with Indiana University East’s “One Book, Many Voices” project.

Students glaze bowls during the March 2016 Glaze-A-Thon. This year’s event will be held October 21 before the Empty Bowls luncheon on Oct. 25.

Guests are invited to select a bowl, made by IU East ceramics students and community potters, and have it filled with soup and bread.

Area restaurants including The Den at IU East, Gulzar’s Indian Cuisine, Hometown Dining Company, and Reid Health’s Cafe at Twelve Hundred will contribute soups for the event.

There is a limit of one bowl per person. The cost per person is $10. Proceeds will benefit the Gleaners BackPacks Program. Gleaners’ BackSacks is a Weekend Food for Kids Program that provides backsacks containing food for children in need. Each BackSack includes shelf-stable food that does not need refrigeration, and has enough food for six small meals and a snack. BackSacks meet 51 percent of the recommended daily intake of nutrients for 4-8 year olds.

Carrie Longley, chair of Fine and Performing Arts and assistant professor of Fine Arts, established the program locally in November 2014.

To prepare for Empty Bowls, IU East students in ceramics courses handcraft 250 ceramic bowls for participants to choose from and purchase at the event. Area artists also donated bowls.

In addition to the Empty Bowls luncheon, the Fine Arts department invites the campus and community to Glaze-A-Thon to help glaze the bowls, the final step in the process to prepare the pieces for Empty Bowls.

The Glaze-A-Thon is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, October 21, in Tom Raper Hall, Room 116. Ceramics students will be on hand to help volunteers choose and apply glazes to the bowls.

Empty Bowls is sponsored by the IU East School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Throughout the day, the community is invited to participate in the events and activities leading up to the evening presentation by Steve Pemberton. Pemberton is the author of A Chance in the World, this year’s “One Book, Many Voices” selection. He will discuss his book at 7 p.m. in Vivian Auditorium, located in Whitewater Hall.

The focus of “One Book, Many Voices” is to foster discussion based on the common text. Now in its fifth annual year at IU East, the “One Book, Many Voices” mission is to foster a campus and community discussion about themes and ideas inspired by a common text in an effort to develop camaraderie, inform knowledge, and inspire action towards positive civic engagement and improvement.

Copies of A Chance in the World are available at Morrisson-Reeves Library in Richmond, as well as Centerville-Center Township, Hagerstown and Union County public libraries. Morrisson-Reeves plans a book discussion at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 19.
