The next Community Engagement Series, “Making Sense of Madness: Campaigns and Elections in the Modern Era,” will be presented by School of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean Ross Alexander and Assistant Professor of Political Science Chera LaForge. The presentation will be held on Thursday, October 8, in the Whitewater Hall Community Room.

Each presentation in the series begins with a reception at 5:15 p.m. followed by the lecture at 6 p.m. The presentation is free and open to the public.

The Community Engagement Series is presented by the Indiana University East School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

“Making Sense of Madness: Campaigns and Elections in the Modern Era” will address several relevant and salient topics pertaining to the 2016 campaign cycle at the federal, state, and local levels, including candidates, elections, issues, and predictions.

Chera LaForge

Alexander and LaForge will frame the presentation using historical and contemporary trends and data that influence elections and campaigns today.

Alexander serves as dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and professor of political science. He earned a Ph.D. in Political Science from Northern Illinois University and an M.P.A. from Arizona State University. He has published numerous book chapters and academic journal articles in the areas of American politics, state and local government, public budgeting and finance, gambling policy, public personnel administration, online teaching and learning, and information literacy in higher education.

LaForge is an assistant professor of political science. She received her Ph.D. and M.A. in Political Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her main research interests lie in Congress and legislative behavior. Specifically, she looks at how progressive ambition, or the desire for legislators to move on to more prestigious political offices, impacts the quality of representation and campaign behavior.
