Online degree in informatics prepares students for cutting-edge careers

June 16, 2017 |

Indiana University East will offer a Bachelor of Science in Informatics degree online beginning fall 2017.

The degree program is in collaboration with Indiana University Online, and jointly includes IU Kokomo, IU Northwest, IU South Bend and IU Southeast. The program encompasses 120 credit hours and is designed to enhance potential for careers in web development, supply chain management, medical records, systems analysis, biotechnology and public relations.

“IU East is excited to begin offering this online degree program that will teach students the leading-edge computing skills that are in demand today in a variety of career areas,” said Michelle Malott, executive vice chancellor of Academic Affairs. “Informatics uses technology for organizing digital information and supporting ‘big picture’ thinking and complex problem solving, some of the most sought-after skills by employers today.”

Dean of the School of Business and Economics Bob Mulligan said the informatics degree is an exciting interdisciplinary area at the cutting edge of computer science and real-world applications, particularly in healthcare, market research, and business administration.

“IU East’s B.S. in Informatics graduates have always been highly sought after in industry and the program already enjoys an enviable placement record,” Mulligan said. “This program gives students an excellent background in computer programming and analytics. I find it especially exciting that we can now participate in an online collaborative program to deliver this degree, offering the best the IU system has to offer, combined with the flexibility of an online program. Online delivery is a natural for any program which produces information technology professionals.”

The Bachelor of Science in Informatics is designed for working students, including those with prior credits or an associate degree. Students will learn how information is collected, cultivated and organized digitally. They also will learn how to use informatics to solve complex problems involving privacy, security and education as they relate to large societal issues such as poverty, the environment and health care.

“The online Bachelor of Science in Informatics prepares students for careers in information technology, taught by expert faculty in enterprise computing, computer programming, database administration, and applications development. This program prepares its graduates to compete and collaborate in a dynamic global environment,” Mulligan said.

Following IU Online’s innovative approach, the degree will enable students to be admitted to one IU campus but learn from faculty and network with students throughout the IU system. The campuses will collaborate to offer coursework to increase student flexibility and convenience and to increase degree completion.

To meet degree requirements within four years, students should complete 30 credit hours each year, minus transferred credits. Tuition for the online Bachelor of Science in Informatics will be approximately $220 per credit hour for in-state students and $320 per credit hour for out-of-state students, plus fees.
