Indiana University East Sculpture Garden

Six new sculptures are now a part of the Indiana University East landscape. The pieces for the Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit began arriving July 23 for installation.

The sculptures are part of a juried exhibit. Each piece is on loan and will be on campus for two years. Artists from across the United States were invited to submit their work for consideration to be included in the Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit.

The jurors for the exhibit are Greg Hull, and IU East assistant professors of Fine Arts Ann Kim and Carrie Longley, and Ed Thornburg, art gallery curator.

IU East has nine sculpture pads that were added to outside areas during the campus construction and renovation of the quad area completed in August 2014. The renovation for the quad was designed to provide a more amiable space for campus gatherings and events. This improvements included additional landscaping with a rain garden, pergola, seating, planting new perimeter trees and replacement of some of the inner sidewalks.

The Jurors

Greg Hull

Greg Hull is an Installation Artist and Sculptor, originally from Richmond, Indiana. He received his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and his MFA from the University of Delaware. Currently residing in Indianapolis, Greg is an Associate Professor of Sculpture at the Herron School of Art and Design. His permanent installations include Urban Geometry at the Indiana State Museum, Breath at the Indianapolis International Airport and Amelia’s Gate at the Amelia Earhart Memorial in Atchison, Kansas. A USA Grant nominee, he has exhibited in numerous solo and joint exhibitions including the Richmond Art Museum, Richmond, Indiana and Indiana University East. He has received several fellowship grants including the Efroymson Contemporary Art Fellowship and the Creative Renewal Fellowship, Arts Council of Indianapolis.

Ann Kim

Ann B. Kim is a maker and a teacher. Born in NJ, she grew up in Seoul, Los Angeles, and Southern Illinois, before moving to Northern California to pursue her college education. She received her BA in Art History and BFA in Art Practice from UC Berkeley, and holds an MFA in Studio Art with concentrations in Painting and Drawing from Mills College. She is currently residing in Dayton, OH and is an Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University East in Richmond, IN. She has exhibited nationally and has been represented by Micaela Gallery in San Francisco, CA and Muse Gallery in Columbus, OH. She is also a recipient of numerous awards and grants including the Murphy & Cadogan Fellowship from the San Francisco Arts Commission and the Sarah Lewis Foundation Painting Scholarship.

Carrie Longley

Carrie Longley is a studio artist and educator. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University East. She holds a BA in Studio Art from Wittenberg University and MFA from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. She exhibits her work extensively throughout the United States and has received numerous awards including “Emerging Craftsman” from Ohio Designer Craftsman, “The Bobby Kadis Award” at the Fenland School of Crafts, MCACD Individual Artist Fellowship, and the $10,000 William and Dorothy Yeck “Young Sculptor’s Award.”

Ed Thornburg

Edward Thornburg graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Masters of Arts in Education from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He was fine arts teacher in Northeastern High and Elementary Schools (Fountain City, Indiana) for 35 years. He is currently Lecturer in Fine Arts and Curator of Exhibitions at Indiana University East in Richmond, Indiana. He has won local and national awards for his works and his current art pursuits are “found art” and sculpture.

About the selection

It was a fun challenge to choose sculptures to exhibit on our campus. Jurors, Greg Hull, Ann Kim, Ed Thornburg and I reviewed and scored over 100 sculptures from artists residing all across the country. One of our exhibiting artists, Jeffie Brewer, is traveling 990 miles from Texas to deliver his work. He explained that he limits his travel for delivering artwork to 1000 miles. Our location came in 10 miles under his limit!

In the end, we chose artworks which would have a strong visual presence in the open and natural setting of our campus quad and also have dynamic design from multiple vantage points. As a juror, I’m drawn to works which feature unique combinations of the familiar and imagined. With much of the work, the use of familiar materials initially captured my attention, while the imagined designs encouraged me to further investigate and admire the work. I would like to commend and thank the artists for participating in this exhibition. My sincere congratulations to the exhibiting artists who were able to transform their ideas and materials into innovative works of art.
